Second round of the CIK-FIA Karting World Championship (KF1)24/07/2011
Exciting racing, drama and domination by Bridgestone’s kart tyres. That summarises the second round of the CIK-FIA Karting World Championship (21-24 July). The event took place at the 1700 meters long Zuera circuit, located 29 kilometers north of Zaragoza in Spain. Championship leader Nyck de Vries did what was expected of him, he used his Bridgestone tyres to good effect and qualified on pole for the Saturday and Sunday races.
It looked as if it would be again a walk over for the Flying Dutchman as during the first championship round, he had a lights to flag win in race one, never challenged during the 15 lap race. However, his luck then changed, as the Parilla engine refused to start on the grid of races two and three. The Zanardi driver therefore had to start from the back of the grid. Impressing the spectators with his brilliant overtaking maneuvers, he finished fourth in race two and seventh in race three.
Unfortunately for him he was excluded from the second race for receiving unauthorised assistance from a mechanic at the start of the race. One’s misfortune is somebody else’s luck. Brit Alex Albon (Intrepid-TM) took full advantage of his rivals problem to grab his first world victory in the top karting category in race two, and Japanese Yu Kanamaru (Tony Kart –Vortex) became a very popular winner of race three.
Race four kept the spectators focused until the last second, with Nyck charging through the field to a well deserved third and Alex Albon defending his lead in style to take his second victory of the weekend. Needless to say that all winners were racing on Bridgestone tyres. As a matter of fact in every race the first 15 drivers where equipped with the Japanese rubber.
